Marc was approached by the production designer who also worked on Constantine when the TV show “Preacher” was in development. Having seen his work on the replicas of the Constantine TV zippos, he thought making the “F*ck Communism” Zippo for Jesse Custer would be right up his sleeve. He wanted a Zippo that looked like one of those seen during the Vietnam war era. During the course of 3 days, they worked together through Messenger to come tot he look he had in mind and the result was a heavily weathered Zippo with worn off plating and “F*ck Communism” done the same style font. The word ‘f*ck’ had to be obscured for TV censorship reasons.
The process of making these is first applying an etching mask fort he test and electroetching away the plating. Once the brass is visible, further etching is done with ferric chloride. The sides of the zippo are then worn down tot he brass with sandingblocks and the entire zippo is chemically aged and oxidised. The process from start to finish takes about 4 hours.
