Constantine Lighter (TV Version Zippo)
After the CW show was cancelled after just one season, John Constantine was to make an appearance in an episode of the TV show “Arrow”. The problem was that all 8 zippos that were made for the Constantine TV show had vanished without a trace. Prior to this, my good friend Marc was working on a replica and was lucky enough to have in his hands the original artwork, used for he ones on the show, allowing him to make a screen accurate replica.
The production designer of Constantine, who had seen my replicas and was impressed with the quality, approached him through a friend to get one to be used in the “Arrrow” episode. Later, when John Constantine was to appear in “Legends of Tomorrow”, the show’s prop-master approached Master Metal Smith Marc to make 2 for production.
The zippo for he TV series is totally different tot the one seen in the movie. The movie version was an oversized milled brass one with etched floral engravings and inserted Benedict coins, where the TV version stayed more true tot the comics size wise. The appearance is totally different though. The TV version incorporates both symbolism (wicca, celtic, luciferian, etc) as well as latin text: “Vade Tetro Satana” (stay back Satan) and “Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux” (Holy Cross be my light).
The process of making these is by roughing up the brass zippo and applying a coat of enamel paint. The paint needs to dry for 24 hours. Then, using a laser-cutter and several jigs”The patterns are engraved through the paint, exposing the brass where it needs to be etched. Before i got my laser-cutter, i used UV sensitive dry-film fort his, which was a pain. Once the patterns are lasered away on all 5 sides, they are suspended upside down in etchant for 2 hours. The mask is removed, the sleeve cleaned up and then chemically aged and darkened. The whole process, takes about 6 hours. Custom stand included with every order!
